Sheathing, Stairs, and Balcony

A busy few days in the very warm weather but the crew has now completed the sheathing on the low (18' tall) wall of the house and is within one row of the high (24' wall).  All of this is to stiffen the structure in preparation for setting the roof beams in their final locations and getting ready to deck the roof.
Karen and I have been working like mad trying to get the 2" thick T&G pine prepped with a coat of oil and 2 coats of urethane so there finishing is all pre-done and there won't be any upside down rolling or brushing once it's installed.
Daryl also built the second stair segment last week so now you can access the second floor very easily and Corey has been working on the master bedroom balcony complete with sloping floor for drainage and a parapet wall which will tie in the veranda fascia on that side of the house.

Celestory Curved Barge Boards & Skylights

Today the curved bargeboards were installed on the ends of the celestory after being laminated up with Steph's help, planed, trimmed and painted.  I'm happy to say that the fit was perfect and the only tough part was the fact they weighed around 100 lbs. each.
The other job completed today was cutting the skylight wells in what will become the finishing room.

Gas Line, Backfill and Some Interior Framing

Also this week we set down a line for the propane and had it backfilled, and I also got a start on some interior framing in the house.  Although it is hard to see in the pictures, the idea was to frame in the bathroom on the main floor of the house and build the joists on top so the second floor bathroom can be started, as well.

A Busy Week of Roofing

All week the crew kept working in the heat to get the pine T&G installed above the rafters on the exposed soffits, then went on to the plywood roof sheathing, which is now nearly complete on the workshop garage, breezeway and house veranda.

Short beams all fixed & Veranda roof started

The short beams have been sorted out with filler blocks and new decorative details made with Steph's assistance. The new blocks have been added and it not only ties everything together, but looks great (better than original plans!)
It's hard to believe that a week ago we were working in dust in heat as it rained all day today and there is standing water everywhere.  In spite of it all, Daryl, Dean and Corey got the veranda roof started today.

Beam Me Up!

Along with all of the interior timber that arrived yesterday, we also received a load of 6" x 10" to form the veranda beam which goes all the way around the house and also forms the breezeway which connects the house and the garage.  Daryl, Dean and Dave worked all afternoon in the heat and dust to not only get the beams placed but also work out a solution to a materials order where I called up every beam about 6" short.  The end result, will be to make a feature out of it.  Stay tuned for future blog reports!

Inside Timbers

This morning, Daryl, Dean and Dave worked to finish off installing all of the floor joist timbers in the house, including the ones surrounding the stairs to the second floor.
