Steps from Deck to Garden

Another project completed this spring is a set of 8 steps to descend the 5 or 6 feet from the deck behind the house down to the level where our vegetable garden will eventually go.  After calculating the rise and run and drafting it all up, 8 boxes were made of pressure-treated 2 x 8's which angled in at 3 degrees each.  The bank was then excavated and the boxes set in place, anchored with re-bar spikes, and back filled with various concrete bits, rocks and crushed gravel.

Suspended Slab for Pizza Oven

With the spring weather back we have set aside some of our indoor work and resumed building the home for our wood-fired pizza oven.  Last fall we built an 'I' shaped stand of concrete blocks filled with re-bar and concrete.  This spring we've picked up by building a form to create the slab on top of the 'I' stand.  After constructing the support and the floor curbs were added to allow for a 42" x 54" x 4" thick completed slab.  A grid of re-bar was wired in place and the concrete was poured a couple of weekends ago.  After sitting in the form for a week, the forms have all been stripped away and the slab is now ready to house the oven.
